Chaney Architects designs healthcare expansion for Grant Medical Foundation
After successfully completing the award winning Cancer Centre for Ruby Hall Clinic, Chaney Architects have designed two satellite hospitals for the same client and undertaken substantial refurbishments of their existing facilities. The 115 bed hospital at Wanworie, Pune is scheduled to open by the end of November this year.
The practice explains: “By and large, hospitals in India are bereft of humanness, so to speak. This hospital attempts to break the mould and create a cheerful environment, yet meet global norms for effective healthcare design.”
The acre and a half narrow site is located in the midst of a burgeoning middle class new suburb. The brief threw up a slew of challenges: there is no comprehensive medical care facility in the vicinity, therefore the catchment area to cater to is huge. It also meant that there was a need for a multi-disciplinary hospital rather than a specialty one.
The plan incorporates emergency, diagnostics, out-patients department, private rooms and three state-of-the-art operating theatres. It is well supported with labs, a physiotherapy unit, a kidney dialysis unit, a chemotherapy day-care centre, a cath lab and a small lecture hall.
The stress on the design team was to produce a sustainable design, low on maintenance and LEED accredited. On completion the hospital is expected to be the second or third LEED accredited healthcare facility in India. The interior design concentrates on the nature theme, yet sleek and contemporary. A second phase will include residential facilities for 200 nurses and interns.
