Technicolour mobile art pavilion by Grimshaw Architects to tour Brazil in 2012

Grimshaw was awarded first prize in a design competition for Mobilizarte, a 500sq m mobile art pavilion which will launch in the summer of 2012. During the years approaching the 2016 Olympics, the structure will travel on rotation throughout 10 cities of Brazil with the desire to provide an accessible cultural hub, which unites city dwellers with the campaign.

The cultural pavilion seeks to establish international exhibitions, film festivals and arts education as universal events and sources, available to a wide audience; an outdoor cinema will show alongside various satellite projects by contemporary artists, whose chosen idea and work is central to each community. Educational workshops will also be available to schools and university students. The series of exhibitions will be closely tied to popular Brazilian events, including Rock in Rio and the 2014 World Cup.

Inspired by Brazilian art, culture and the spirit of the Brazilian Modern Movement, the pavilion’s design is governed by the logistical challenges of mobility. The materials and construction systems allow multiple configurations with straight forward installation and dismantling. A unique system of floating foil and plastic balloons on the roof provide a striking presence, whilst simultaneously creating adjustable natural ventilation and opportunities for unique lighting schemes.

The design forms part of a collaboration with Arup Rio de Janeiro and adapts environmentally, economically and socially to every location. Each design will offer a custom design solution for each city involved. A kit of parts and prefabricated wood trusses allows the design team to arrange the scheme in multiple ways. Upon the pavilion’s arrival, the site will be a distinct, landscaped garden created with the assistance of the local community, establishing an essential connection to inspire the host cities.
