It has everything,... exept spirit.

Shanghai Disney Resort now onsite

The first Disney Park on mainland China is now under construction following a groundbreaking ceremony last Friday. Held as a joint venture by Disney and the Shanghai Shendi Group, the park blends recognisable characters and Disney storytelling on a ‘Magic Kingdom-style’ site, with new attractions and experiences tailored specifically for the people of China.

This multi-strand approach was clearly visible at the groundbreaking ceremony, where a Mickey Mouse character dressed in traditional Chinese costume and a 50-voice Shanghai children’s choir were joined by a female soloist singing in Mandarin and traditional drum music.

Robert A. Iger, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company explained: “Our Shanghai resort will be a world-class family vacation destination that combines classic Disney characters and storytelling with the uniqueness and beauty of China. Working with our Chinese partners, the Shanghai Disney Resort will be both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese."

Incorporating 11 acres of rolling green space, the park will quietly reinforce the issues of sustainability and nature throughout the multiple ‘lands’ within the resort. The Shanghai Disney Resort is set in 963 acres of open space with the ability to expand at a later date if necessary, and besides the main park attractions will feature two themed hotels, a large retail, dining and entertainment venue, recreational facilities, a lake, and various parking and transportation hubs.
