Gensler's renovation of 1950's Terminal 2 at SFO awarded first LEED Gold for a terminal building in America

Fifty-seven years after it was first opened to the public, Terminal 2 (T2) at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been rejuvenated by global design agency Gensler. Mayor Edwin M. Lee unveiled the transformed building last Wednesday and the first flights from T2 are scheduled for Thursday 14th April.

Speaking at the official ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom explained: “Today, as San Francisco unveils the most innovative, environmentally sustainable domestic airport in the country, Terminal 2 marks California’s active role as a transportation hub that connects air travellers with modern comforts.”

The sustainable modernisation has won the complex a LEED Gold certificate, making the project the first LEED Gold Terminal in the United States. Design factors that have contributed to this title include a dual plumbing system that allows for reclaimed water from SFO’s water treatment facility to be reused in terminal toilets, a displacement ventilation system that filters air to improve internal air quality whilst using 20% less energy, a reduction in electricity dependency by the implementation of various skylights and the integration of sustainable building materials such as recycled glass chips and recycled-content carpets.

Original works by talented artists can also be found dotted about T2, with a captivating ceiling installation by Janet Echelman in the ‘Recompose’ area, unique children’s play areas Bay Area artists Walter Kitundu and Charles Sowers, and enchanting ‘Egg’ chairs by designer Fritz Hansen.

Lieutenant Newsom continued: “T2 is an economic engine that has created and will continue to create jobs and bolster our State’s economy while being a responsible environmental steward of our natural resources.”
