Architects develop a retail and urban entertainment complex insipred by the popular game Jenga

10 Design's first major commission has been to design a retail and urban entertainment complex in Zhuhai. At around 450,000sqm it is expected to be the largest retail development in southern China. The site is unique as it is the meeting point between the grid of the city and the natural topography of the surrounding hill range.

An urban super wall made up of 1 and 2 story high "Jenga blocks" forms the perimeter of what is proposed as a giant walled garden. The super wall cracks open and cantilevers across the street edge to provide entry and break out points for the natural landscape contained within.

The pedestrian flow between the adjacent urban centres and residential communities have been analysed both horizontally and vertically. These findings form and sculpt the valleys and buildings within the site, as opposed to planning traditional retail streets and black box shopping centres.

The central buildings forms (or "hills"), framing the pedestrian valleys, are made up of a series of organic planted terraces. These reflect the natural context behind while also providing the forms with inhabited facades allowing pedestrian access up to the public amenities on the roof.

Unlike traditional retail developments 10 Design have used the upper terraces and roof of the development to create a multilayered public park including public amenities such as running tracks, parkland, retreat gardens and external public swimming pool.

The central valley provides shaded pedestrian space and channels the prevailing winds in the spring and autumn months to induce natural ventilation through both the external public areas and internal volumes of the 2 ‘shopping centres' located within the ‘hill' and the ‘Jenga urban block'.
