Windmill Hill did not achieve planning and even on appeal it was turned down as inappropriate for the conservation area it was situated within. So not currently at planning stage.

Award Entry

A small architectural practice making a significant impact in the private residential sector

Designing in a contemporary idiom using traditional materials, Paul+O Architects' projects are distinguished by a rigorous approach and attention to detail, which produces an architecture of uncompromised quality. Whether building in an urban or rural, historic of modern setting, the context of each project is integral to the evolution of the design, resulting in a portfolio of unique buildings.

The practice offers a holistic architectural service with expertise extending to include landscape design, interiors and the design of bespoke furniture and fittings to ensure the delivery of buildings and places with design integrity, both inside and out.

The Wilderness (2007) in Suffolk, is a universally-acclaimed modern country house and one of the few contemporary houses built under PPG7; House on Bassett Road (2009), is the radical remodeling of a Georgian townhouse and features an innovative motorized contemporary interpretation of the Victorian sash window. Indoor Pool (2010) is a dramatic contemporary brick pool house in the grounds of a Victorian country house in Buckinghamshire.

Windmill Hill - currently at the planning stage - distills the lessons learnt on these projects. The project is a new-build courtyard house, enclosed behind an existing brick garden wall in a conservation area in Hampstead, London. The rendered white volume of the first floor peeps over the garden wall, picking up the white render and painted weatherboarding of neighbouring houses, and emphasizing the ribbon of white which cascades down the hill.
