Studio Zoppini presents designs the new Korean 2018 Winter Olympics Bid Venue
Studio Zoppini Associate has composed concept designs of a unique public space for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics bid. Working with structural engineers Expedition Engineering Ltd, the design studio looks to provide the town of Gangneung with a sporting facility of high functional and architectural quality, including a skating track that enables the highest level of performance for the 2018 Olympics.
The proposal includes a flexible multipurpose building which can be used post-Games for a variety of sporting and community events, exhibitions and conventions. It also looks to generate a new centrepiece of ‘an urban, social and human re-qualification of The Gangneung’ taking full advantage of the natural surroundings and local fauna, such as a grove of pine trees and adjoining hills.
A leaf-like canopy creates and inspiring internal volume, regarded by Studio Zoppini Associate as ‘a tribute’ to the picturesque location, ‘as well as recalling the atmosphere of the very early Ovals’. This artificial foliage has been specifically designed to give spectators and athletes the sensation of being enclosed in a forest, with an integrated cable net roof also acting as a lighting device as natural lighting penetrates the arena. The longer sides were left open ‘where you get the most predominant architectural image’.
