A3 Architects implement effective designs that defy the economic recession

In a recession-driven economy, A3 Architects has managed to design and complete spectacular buildings within tight budgets. Hospitals, office parks and enormous multi-functional developments have all been completed on time, within the set budget and meeting all the specific requirements as set out in the clients' brief.

One of their main recent medical projects was Ethekwini Hospital in Durban. It was shortlisted in the WAN Healthcare Sector in 2010. The client requested that it be a '360 degree' building that looks pleasant from all sides, with no services visible. This meant screening most of the services on the building's roof and carefully planning the location of the electrical services on the lower level.

Another important feature of the facility was the improved quality of stay for both the patients and their visitors on a technical and aesthetic level. Technical improvements meant better service delivery by implementing the latest digital equipment for diagnosis and treatment. The aesthetic level focused on creating an environment that was warm and welcoming to all persons using the facility through the use of natural lighting and vibrant colours.

Green Park in Sandton is their largest project to date, featuring a diverse mixture of functions - a pavement retail centre, a public square, 250 apartments, a 5-star hotel and an office tower. The development consists of three high-rise tower blocks orientated in a manner which maximises sunlight and views for the residents. The design prioritises both the spectacular aspects of high-rise architecture and the urban spaces formed at pedestrian level.

Due to the diverse structural and servicing requirements of each different component, the design process lasted more than two years.

Eco Point is a large-scale commercial park in Centurion. The stark, bold design was aimed at distinguishing Eco Point from the other commercial parks in the area. As it is highly visible from the main highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, large signage pylons were designed to match the concrete pillars that denote the entrance to each building.

A3 strives to build spectacular architecture that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
