Zechner & Zechner win an European Steel Design Award
In the course of redesigning Vienna’s Schwechat airport, a new control tower with integrated ATC services was required to replace the airport’s existing tower. The new tower incorporates two functions: housing technical air traffic control apparatus and work stations at its base, and providing observation areas at its ‘summit’.
In September 2005 an European Steel Design Award was awarded to Zechner & Zechner architects for its Vienna Control Tower Project: a membrane covered steel construction, measuring over 3300m². The jury’s main determining criteria included the creative and economical application of steel through technical innovation and ingenious construction.
