Scarlet mobile telecommunications store opens in Haiti as rebuilding work continues
Weston Williamson has now completed a new Digicel Megastore building in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince following an international competition for the project. The project is part of the continuing works to build for the future of Haiti, after the devastating earthquake in January 2010.
The brief was to create an innovative and fresh approach to the design of a new stand-alone mobile communications retail store, where the design embodies the spirit of growth and regeneration.
Weston Williamson’s aim was not to overcomplicate the form of the building, but instead, to use the façade structure to animate the design. The linear frontage will allow efficient solar shading and provide a strong, durable skin to the building.
The winning proposal has views into and out of the store, controlled by the space between aluminium slats and depending on how a person is orientated to the building, may appear transparent or opaque.
The colour red is used predominantly throughout to communicate the Digicel brand and the iconic logo is integrated into the slatted aluminium envelope.
