Buro Happold hosts photo expo to celebrate ten successful years of Bridges Team
This evening, engineering giant Buro Happold will launch a photographic exhibition to celebrate ten years of its highly successful Bridges Team. Formed in 2001 after the firm’s triumph in the international design competition Commune de Roma, the team has accumulated an impressive portfolio of works over the last decade.
At 5 o’clock this afternoon, architecture, design and photographic professionals will gather at Buro Happold’s London offices to listen to guest speakers Cezary M Bednarski, Founding Director of Studio Bednarski Ltd, and David Marks, Managing Director of Marks Barfield Architects, before a debate ensues on the future of bridge design and engineering.
Davood Liaghat, Chief Bridge Engineer at Buro Happold Ltd affirmed: “Bridge design demands a balance of passion, flair and creativity, and best-in-class robust engineering skills. Buro Happold has successfully collaborated with some of the world’s most talented architects to design some of the world’s most inspiring bridges in a synergistic process that has been highly rewarding and extremely enjoyable.”
Projects displayed in the expo include the swooping Alexandra Bridge in Singapore (2003); the cylindrical mesh form of the Harthill Bridge over the M8 in Scotland (under construction); the elegantly curved Greenside Place Bridge in Edinburgh (2001); and the 400m long single span River Liffey Bridge in Dublin.
The major project that sparked the creation of the Bridges Team – the Commune di Roma 2000 design competition – is soon to bear fruit, as the 200m long Ponte della Musica is scheduled to open in May 2011. This dual purpose bridge will be the first large scale bespoke pedestrian / public transport footbridge to cross the River Tiber since Roman rule.
