SmithGroup's design selected for new Marine Sciences campus in South Korea 

The project is a master plan for a new Marine Science campus for the prestigious Postech University in South Korea. The site for the new Marine Science campus is located on an exceptionally beautiful and hilly site on the east coast of Korea overlooking the East Sea. The program includes administration, classroom, and research buildings as well as residential buildings for students and faculty. The campus will be a model of innovative, high-technology, sustainable design. The basic organising concept for the design is a 'wave', a form common to both the land and the sea. The ‘wave’ ties together the Marine sciences campus with the serpentine topography of the hillside.

The plan works to organise the site in a way in which the users can take full advantage of the site’s natural beauty and variation. A series of academic buildings are tucked into the natural topography of the south-facing mountains. Residential buildings are located up the mountain from the academic buildings overlooking the academic building’s roofs. A winding road between the academic and residential buildings allows vehicular access with parking occurring at the top level of the academic buildings or at the lowest level of the residential buildings. The valley floor is thus preserved as an ecological park. Each building’s primary exposure is south, maximising light and views to the promenade, eco park, mountains, and the ocean.

The building entrances face a meandering promenade integrated into the varied treatments of the eco park. The roofs are conceived of as a continuous surface with different functional zones. At the top is a green living roof. Where ideally angled towards the sun, the roof is clad in photovoltaic panels. And where the roof curves down towards the ground, it becomes an array of sunshades for moderating and reflecting sunlight to the building interior. The series of sunshade elements on each academic building form a continuous arcade condition along the promenade. By placing development along the hills, the formerly agricultural valley floor of the site will be reclaimed and revived to a more natural state that becomes an amenity for the campus faculty, researchers, staff, visitors and public. This area is envisioned to become an eco park with water features, paths and walkways, and areas for passive recreation.
