Multi-layered and visually engaging, new education centre merges educational and public space
The new headquarters for the VUC (adult education centre) is located in southern Denmark and is remarkable for its visual openness, emphasising on linking indoor and outdoor spaces. Expansive glass facades combined with a multi-storey atrium and wraparound terraces play functional roles in bringing natural light into the building and providing for accessible fresh air, in addition to allowing a more flexible and inclusive utilisation of space.
The education centre provides the framework for the education facilities of tomorrow where cultural experiences will be a natural part of everyday life thanks to the public ground floor which contains a café area and a concert hall for lectures, concerts and theatrical performances. In this way the education centre is designed as a democratic building, as the overall openness and distinct angular forms contribute to a dynamic and socially integrated complex, encouraging students and teachers of various backgrounds and ages to freely mix and move about.
A healthy indoor climate means less disease, greater comfort and better concentration and is thus a condition of a good learning environment, making sustainable solutions a vital part of the building design. All the elements of the building have multiple functions, contributing to optimised energy consumption and a healthy indoor climate all year round. For example, the wraparound terraces function as sun protection which protects against and takes advantage of the heat of sunlight.
