Showa Sekkei, Inc. completes university library which also serves the wider community
Shikoku Gakuin University is located in Zentsuji City, in the northwest of Kagawa Prefecture. The campus is surrounded by the mountain range of the region. Because it is the only university in the city, the Library of the Shikoku Gakuin University cooperates with the City Library, sharing books, publications, materials, interlibrary computer system terminals and other resources. This library is open not only to university students and personnel, but also to all the citizenry, so that they can access a wide range of information, as well as disseminate ideas and works that they create.
One section of the library building has a vaulted ceiling above the ground and first floors, unifying the two storeys in this section into one grand space. This opens up the area to accommodate rows bookshelves that constitute giant walls of books, as well as reading areas. The reader can concentrate comfortably on reading a book, or glance up to rest his eyes on the greenery outside the large windows at the ends of the reading hall. This open space is at once relaxing and supportive of study, in that it facilitates concentration on books as well as interactions with people and contact with the natural environment.
The reading spaces face onto the green landscape and brooks; on rainy days the large roof covering the building is designed to allow rainwater to flow down into the creeks, providing a waterfall effect. Furthermore, the brises-soleils on the west exterior walls break up the large space whilst reducing the solar heat load. All these features, taken together, create a quiet and tranquil space for study. The open spaces and nooks are brought together under one large roof, making it possible for the library to serve a variety of functions and provide a rich array of impressions.
