LINK designs contemporary school building with several multipurpose halls

This project was won in an EEA competition in 2005 and awarded the Moss City Arcitectural Award in 2009. The school covers an area of 22,000 sq m and is centrally located right next to the oldest church in the district dating back to 1860. The school is home to several multipurpose halls for culture and arts, a picture gallery, and the Moss council assembly hall. The key elements of the brief of this project were to establish the design and position of a complex and modern school that would integrate the building as a positive contribution to the neighbourhood and the town.

The surrounding old buildings have been redesigned and given new functions. The contemporary building is characterised by a clean and unpretentious design connecting the old and the new together with a new identity. Kirkeparken high school is designed for 1,200 students and 200 staff. The development consists of 14,000 sq m new build and 7,500 sq m rehabilitation of both the interior and exterior. As it was important to keep the school open during the construction period, the development was built in stages over a period of 5 years. Upon completion, LINK Arkitektur project manager Harald Gründel was, in 2009, rewarded with the schools honorary award for his ability to stay faithful to the design concept throughout the duration of the project.

The school is equipped with a new sports hall fitted with a climbing wall. It also boasts a laboratory and chemistry room, a kitchen for the training of upcoming chefs, various music and audio studios, and drama and crafts studies. The new schools architectural presence is defined by the use of sustainable materials and a natural palette of pale colours that change in intensity throughout the buildings. The use of art has been an integral part of this project and contributions from several international artists has made Kirkeparken high school an important landmark in Moss.
