Cannon Design's new film & animation facility for Capilano University

The Nat and Flora Bosa Centre for Film and Animation at Capilano University is defined as a 'machine for film' whose purpose drives the formal, spatial and material development design decisions, and addresses notions of film on multiple levels. It becomes a mechanism supporting teaching, creating moments of potentially cinematic power and acts as a metaphor for cinematic qualities and devices - based on an understanding of where architecture and cinema merge.

The design implements many fundamental conceptual issues including creating an environment where film study, allied arts and technologies are fostered and nourished, completing the campus as a legible, compelling, accessible community, while creating an iconic building that acts as a campus gateway. Structure, movement, frame, glimpse, peripheral, composition, sequence, skin, rhythm, colour, foreshadow, overlay, linear disjunction, light density, compressed space, expanded space, montage, collage, continuous space and discontinuous space are the syntax of architecture and cinema. This common ground is understood as a powerful critical and conceptual generator of ideas and work in both disciplines of architecture and cinematic education.

The physical construct creates a potential matrix of spatial and material conditions that can be interpreted as a physical canvas for film making. Externally, the building provides a platform for long shots and panoramic views. Internally, long neutral corridors with abstract and intense light conditions foster working spaces that merge and overlay with the building’s public realm. As such, the building performs a double duty - acting as pedagogical inspiration, as well as providing gathering spaces and necessary operating services. When complete in July 2011, the building will directly engage and integrate the creative possibilities of its architecture (icon and gateway) and its academic program (film and animation).
