New images issued this week show temporary and adapted venues for 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games

A press conference was held in London this week to convey plans for additional temporary venues and the transformation of existing arenas by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Paralympic Games (LOCOG), Populous, Atkins and Drivers Jonas Deloitte.

Over 20,000 Olympic and Paralympic athletes will descend on England’s capital in the summer of 2012 for the Games and more than 120 temporary venues are rapidly taking shape to accommodate the huge numbers of world class sporting champions. Images issued at the recent press conference demonstrate the transformation of venues such as Lord’s Cricket Ground (Archery) and the Lee Valley White Water Centre (Canoe Slalom) and development of temporary structures at Horse Guard’s Parade (Beach Volleyball) and Greenwich Park (Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon).

Much care has been taken to ensure that the look and feel of each facility is in keeping with the overall experience of the 2012 London Games through an extensive ‘overlay’ scheme. Populous, Atkins and Drivers Jonas Deloitte have been working together under the guidance of LOCOG on all aspects of the vast development, including user experience, delivery of seating, accommodation and landscaping down to power, water and lighting.

Elements of the overlay scheme include 250,000 temporary seats, 165,000 sq m of tents, 2,500 cabins, 140km of fencing and 250km of crowd barriers. Jeff Keas, Principal of Populous, said: "Sport is at the core of the overlay project, but more than that, we have focused on London as the backdrop. This means ensuring wherever we can that either the historic buildings at venues like Greenwich Park or Lord’s, or the iconic London skyline, remain in sight for spectators whilst creating an intimate atmosphere for the athletes."

In other Olympic news, 'big build' construction work on the Velodrome at the Olympic park has now been completed and the venue has been handed over the LOCOG for overlay works. The Velodrome was designed by Hopkins Architects and sports an elegant double-curvature roof and 6,000 seats spread over two tiers, split by a 360 degree concourse level which offers incredible views across the Olympic Park and capital city beyond.
