Modest airport in ski resort of Mestia, Georgia aims to boost tourism in the local area

The highland town of Mestia in Georgia can be found on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Order (UNESCO)’s list of World Heritage Sites with its defensive stone towers marking it aside as a location of outstanding universal value. Recently, Georgia embarked upon a varied scheme to develop tourism in Mestia, and Berlin-based architecture practice J. Mayer H. Architects was commissioned to design a new airport to improve accessibility to the area, currently being utilised as a ski resort.

Composed in three sections, the airport building is encased in tinted glazing and white cladding, making a distinct architectural statement in the mountainous natural location. Structural supports create a recurring pattern on the interior of the building, although the dramatic effect is lost from an external perspective. The modest airport was officially opened on 24th December 2010, after being taken from design to completion in just three months.
