WAN takes a look at the many remarkable structures slated for completion in 2011
This year, some of the most forward-thinking and innovative designs across the globe are due for completion, pushing the boundaries of modern architecture to the limit. From dynamic, multi-faceted cultural centres to dramatically angled hotel towers (leaning at 15 degrees to the leaning tower in Pisa’s 3.97 degrees) and the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, 2011 is shaping up to be the year when high end architecture met the world of modern sculpture head on.
This said, there is also Renzo Piano’s sensitive glass extension to the red-brick Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the traditional yet unashamedly luxurious Park Hyatt Saadiyat Island Hotel and Resort in Abu Dhabi courtesy of Perkins Eastman to look forward to.
Also on the cards are new concept designs for the Guggenheim Museum in Finland and Snohetta’s commission for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Raphael Vinoly’s highly-debated New Domino scheme is set to burst into life in 2011, alongside Hollwichkushner’s senior housing project in Cote d' Ivorie and Zaha Hadid’s Middle East Centre in Oxford, UK.
