New Japanese home from Kazunori Fujimoto Architect & Associates
The site is located on a hill with a panoramic view of Seto Inland Sea. The client was born and bred on an island in this sea area, and he really loves this beautiful scenery. He wished to not only see the view like a still image, but also to feel the ocean atmosphere surrounding the area throughout the whole house.
Scenic rooms often turn the ‘back part' of a house such as this into a dark corridor or sub-room, but in this house, to set the court with skylight at the back of the rooms, it is possible to enjoy the life opening to both of the sea and the mountain side. The architects selected a shell construction for the roof to spread over the entire space.
The slab reinforcement consists of a single layer with a thickness of 120mm. The roof covers the whole the house, both 'inside' and 'outside'. Usually, in the case of the shell construction, large beams or columns of a concrete frame are needed for the thrust of the shell.
In this house, however, light construction and simple space is realised by arranging a steel frame with the reinforced concrete.
It is free from arbitrary decisions and consists of simple construction, but at the same time there are rich sequences of spaces and a comfortable relationship between the house and its surroundings.
