Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) designed by wHY Architecture opens
The Grand Rapids Art Museum, best known for its collection of 19th and 20th century American and European paintings and sculpture, opened its doors in October to a new $75million building. The Michigan based facility, which is being touted as “the first and only art museum in the world that is LEED certified”, is designed by Los Angeles based wHY Architecture, led by Kulapat Yantrasast, a former associate of Tadao Ando.
Sited in the heart of a growing West Michigan community, the new concrete and glass building sits adjacent to a Maya Lin -designed sculptural park in downtown Grand Rapids Michigan. The building comprises 125,000 square feet, providing more than three times the gallery space of its former building for permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as space for education and public programs. In addition to the galleries, the building includes a 285-seat auditorium, education center, research library, café, museum shop and conference and study rooms.
