RTKL's new luxury residential tower redefines Austin's city skyline
Soaring 300 ft above downtown Austin, Texas, The Monarch is a trend-setting example of smart growth luxury that has redefined the city’s downtown skyline. As Austin’s only luxury high-rise apartment tower, the project is designed to complement the city’s unique character and appealing lifestyle. The concept takes the form of a 29-storey high-rise tower that blends sleek, clean lines with the judicious use of materials and colours native to the area.
Austin is known for its Monarch butterflies, which pass over the city during their annual migration to Mexico. Renowned as creatures of significant beauty and grace, the butterfly inspired the design team to create a space that similarly pays tribute to the ideals of natural beauty. The Monarch motif is expressed throughout the design with features such as a butterfly-shaped roof detail that crowns the building and a glass handrail system that creates a pixilated effect resembling Monarch wings.
The tower’s elliptical shape allows sweeping views of the state capitol dome in one direction and the surrounding hillsides in the other. The 390-unit tower features an 'active lobby' concept designed so that a variety of lobby level spaces including a juice bar, coffee bar, fitness center, and billiards room flow seamlessly together. Innovative unit plans position the living areas to the back of the floor plan to maximise natural light from the expansive windows and glass rail balconies.
A warm, sunny colour palette and natural finishes including smooth wood surfaces, granite counters and gracious open floor plans blend global sophistication with Texas-style comfort. The project incorporates a number of sustainable design elements including pre-programmed digital thermostats, local and recycled materials, recycled construction waste, shared structured parking and ENERGY STAR appliances. The project is rated 3-stars in Austin Energy’s Green Building Program.
