A classic shophouse front artfully masks a beautiful home that oozes sophistication
55 Blair Road was a renovation and restoration project of a traditional art deco style shop house. To brighten it up, the courtyard also serves as a large light well with reflective aluminum cladding on the walls to reflect sunlight. This set-up is also ideal for cross-ventilation to cool the interior naturally. Static walls were replaced with glazed partitions, which could either segregate the outdoor pool from the rest of the first floor, or merge them into a single large space if so desired.
The lounge walls also double as both exhibition canvas and storage space, with large art pieces cleverly concealing recesses within the concrete. The main spiral staircase is a rhythmic ribbon that ascends to the attic space. This distinct architectural feature acts as a central pin through the main section of the residence. Naturally-lit by a cylindrical roof skylight, this creates a vertical beam of light that hits the base of the stairs beautifully.
On the second and third floors, the stairwell is encased in stainless steel mesh, partially breaking up the circulation area and spatially dividing the bedrooms. This residence demonstrates a balance between nature and contemporary living, exciting the senses by promoting light open plan living.
