Diller Scofidio + Renfro adds a touch of colour to New York's Lincoln Center
The Hypar Pavilion is a green public plaza designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in New York's Lincoln Center. Spread across the institute's North Plaza, the twisted grass plane lays atop a glass pavilion restaurant, acting as 'an occupiable green roof'.
Angled away from the bustling noise of the city, the 7,200 sq ft topographical plane acts as an oasis of green in a high rise concrete jungle. The free-standing structure touches the ground at the south-west corner, rising to the highest points at the south-east and north-west corners.
Beneath this expanse of greenery lies a 11,000 sq ft restaurant with a contoured wood ceiling, capable of serving 160 diners and 40 individuals at the bar in a split facility where diners can watch their meals being prepared as the 1,000 sq ft kitchen opens out onto the dining area.
Elizabeth Diller comments: “Hypar Pavilion’s moment of invention came when we discovered how to design a destination restaurant without consuming public space on the Lincoln Center campus. The roof became a new kind of interface between public and private, with an occupiable twisting grass canopy over a glass pavilion restaurant.”
