Studio RHE completes an all glass rooftop home in London's Notting Hill

The Penthouse is situated on the tops of two adjacent 1930s apartment blocks in London’s Notting Hill. The brief asked for a breathtaking new living space that would maximise the available views and be a showcase for cutting edge technology. This lightweight, laser-cut stainless steel frame with custom made frameless double curvature sealed glass panels, naturally ventilating automatic hydraulic gull wing windows and curved blinds creates a unique perspective and maximises the views and living among the canopy of the Crescent’s trees. The two blocks are joined together by an all glass two-storey bridge; a glass dual access custom provides private access to the two top floors.

Entry to the home is provided by an Iris Recognition System, which activates the external lighting, lift and provides secure access to the owners level. Curved sealed double-glazed high insulation heat reflective units were hand made in Italy with the corner units slumped over 3D steel formers, while the windows are hydraulically actuated with inbuilt rams pushing the 500kg units and locking them in position up to the horizon line.

The black basalt clad ribbon fireplaces are 6 metres long with remote control activation and heat control. Invisible TV monitors are hidden behind antiqued mirror panels with remote flush actuation and speakers are plastered in to the ceilings. The flooring is seamless epoxy, wet laid with bronze dust mix and the doors and furniture are hand made riveted. Roof terrace balustrades are cast white gel coat GRP swan necks with yacht wire and stainless steel handrails. The internal staircase is made from sawn Yarra timber railway sleepers and appears to float over an aluminium stair panel under lit with LED strips.

Richard Hywel Evans says of the Penthouse: “This 750 s qm Penthouse utilises the latest technology to create an unparalleled space for modern living."
