Latvian design studio complete mobile dwelling with essence of a traditional home

Esclice is a mobile home concept by Riga's ARHIIDEA Arhitekti designers Toms Kokins, Eriks Grube and Martins Hermansons. Based on the design of the traditional Latvian barn – a simple form with natural wooden siding and roof – the trio devised a two storey dwelling that can be transported to anywhere in the world on the back of a lorry.

The home comes entirely pre-fitted with interior finishing and furniture, contemporary in design but with the opportunity for owners to personalise their own space. The side walls of the dwellings are constructed using plywood birch panels, whilst the floor and ceilings are covered in ash wood, all easily painted in the owner's desired style.

The architects' concept is based on the idea that 'our everyday life needs are often overestimated, leading towards excessive consumption of material goods, including the space'. In response, the three Latvian designers constructed a spacial composition with a pitched roof that they believe 'is essential for modelling space that embodies the archetypical sense of home', but with highly limited space.

Arhiidea Ltd. state that each home can be constructed in around two hours by two workers and a crane operator, with the potential to extend at a later date. The finished home can then be loaded onto a truck and manoeuvred elsewhere, with eight foundation posts, water, waste water and electricity installations needed to reposition in a new location.
