Eric Parry completes new office building in London's West End

23 Savile Row is a new office building designed by Eric Parry Architects in Mayfair. It is an elegant and timeless building stitched into the historic fabric of Savile Row.

Arranged as two wings flanking a recessed central section, the six storey scheme consists of 14,640 sq m of office space from the first floor upwards with generously proportioned retail space at ground level. The quality and details of the finely articulated façade is a contemporary design response to this conservation area in the heart of London’s West End. The stonework was conceived as a sequence of trabeated openings within a Portland stone wall. Each window opening is flanked by pilasters and supporting 3m long lintels.

The depth of the taught façade allows full height windows to the deep office plan, whilst articulating the exterior with strong shadows. The dark base of Indian granite on a larger 6m bay supports four Portland stone storeys with two recessed office storeys above with aluminium piers and lintels. The architectural language of Savile Row has been reinforced by utilising traditional UK sourced materials and construction techniques to produce a building of quality and permanence.

The building successfully brings together architecture, art and everyday life. Its formal quality, carefully conceived proportions, and unusual scale have attracted those willing to pay a premium for good design, bringing as it does highly flexible and generous floor space. Most recently Hauser and Wirth have opened two art gallery spaces adding an extraordinary dimension to London’s West End galleries.

Eric Parry chose the American sculptor Joel Shapiro to work with as a collaborator on the project from an early stage and the sculpture ‘here’ by Joel hovers dramatically above the entrance canopy between the two sentinel wings.
