Sasaki Associates completes vast glass extension to University of Arizona Student Recreation Center
The LEED platinum, 54,000 sq ft expansion of the existing Student Recreation Center nearly doubles the amount of space for fitness while expanding the Center's recreational program offerings.
The expansion includes a 35,000 sq ft Fitness Center, Cardio Mezzanine and Multiple Athletic Court (MAC). These major program elements connect directly to the existing recreation facility via an indoor ‘street'.
The project also shapes important outdoor spaces; an extensive use of glass allows interior occupants to view activity outdoors, and vice versa. A particular transparency is given to the Fitness Center, a large indoor space that overlooks the active 6th Street campus corridor.
Outdoor Adventures occupies a prominent project location, advertising its unique opportunities for students to explore the great outdoors. A rock-climbing Bouldering Wall and outdoor fitness class space occupy the enclosed courtyard. The courtyard is further defined by two intersecting roof elements providing carefully tuned passive shading.
The project integrates passive solar orientation, programmed outdoor space, day-lighting strategies, and indoor environmental quality as fundamental properties of the building. The Recreation Expansion is the first LEED certified building on campus.
