Experimental, modular, eco-friendly, prefabricated, building system.

Michael Jantzen's M-2 is a design study for a modular prefabricated eco-friendly house that utilizes the same building system that I developed for the construction of the original M-house called, M-vironments. This structure would be constructed from the same basic components used in the design of the M-house, but different numbers of those components would be used and they would be arranged in different ways onto a different size and shaped support frame. The main structural support frame of the house is made of four-inch square steel tubes that are welded and bolted together to form eight-foot cubes, and/or portions of cubes. Steel and foam insulated structural panels are bolted to the frame in different combinations to create spaces that can be heated or cooled. Some of these panels also contain windows and doors, and some form plug on spaces for storage, seating, sleeping etc. The slotted panels are made of a concrete composite material mounted to secondary steel support frames. These panels are hinged to the main frame so they can be moved into different positions after the primary construction, in order to perform various functions. Some of these panels are used to shade the sun, some are used to block the wind, and some are used to form exterior seating and/or table areas. Some of these moveable-hinged panels are also used to support photovoltaic cells and/or solar heaters that supply heat and electricity to the occupants of the house. The main purpose of this exercise was to explore ways in which the same basic components of the M-house could generate a very different structure, to accommodate the different needs of its potential occupants. www.humanshelter.org
