Bohlin Cywinski Jackson's glass pavilion marks striking entrance to subterranean retail store
Located near the busy Pudong district in Shanghai, the Apple Store sits in a circular urban plaza below street level. A large glass cylindrical pavilion, 41 ft tall and 32 ft wide, marks the entrance. The plaza's monumental stone staircase is on axis with the Pearl Tower in the distance and the Apple Store entrance.
Visitors are drawn to the centre of the circular plaza to the glass pavilion. A shallow reflecting pool surrounds the pavilion, blurring the boundary of the solidity of stone and the transparency of glass. After entering the pavilion visitors descend to the store via a spiral glass staircase. Below the plaza, the store opens up to an expansive space with minimal and refined displays to showcase the Apple products.
