Best of British goes overseas - again.

As David Chipperfield wins the UK’s most prestigious architecture award for his Museum of Modern Literature in Germany, so doubts surface again about whether the UK can commission good architecture. Why is it that the UK can produce architects but not architecture? Examples exist everywhere of great architecture created by British architects overseas. Zaha had to prove herself overseas before getting a UK commission, Rogers cut his teeth in Paris with the Pompidou Centre. Last year the prize went to Madrid and even this year, four out of the six British shortlisted entries were outside the UK. WAN talks to Alexander Schwarz in Berlin, project architect for Chipperfield’s award winning museum.

Sarah Gaventa, director CABE Space comments:
"The shortlist for this year’s Stirling Prize reflects the fact that the talents of British architects are both recognised, and are in great demand, by clients worldwide. But it also demonstrates that we need more clients in Britain to be ambitious and constantly demand the best level of architecture. Then we will have more opportunities to create high quality projects in this country too."
