Portsmouth’s 170m Spinnaker Tower has opened this week. Planned as one the UK’s Millennium projects, the construction has been dogged by delays and cost over-runs. Sited adjacent to the historic port, it was designed by HGP Architects to resemble a ship’s sail and is supported by 84 piles some driven 50m into the sea bed. Features include a glass lift and three observation platforms at 105, 110 and 115m. The tower will become a national landmark and will provide a significant tourist boost for the city.
