Zumthor will complete his Serpetine pavilion before work starts on building his Devon house. The Serpentine Gallery's long-standing stipulation is for an architect who has yet to build/finish a project in the UK. And Zumthor won't have when the pavilion opens. So it is not a break from tradition. You will note this year's pavilion was designed by Jean Nouvel - his city of London office/retail scheme is due to open later this year. Same thing.

Peter Zumthor tipped to design Serpentine Pavilion 2011 in London's Hyde Park

As Jean Nouvel's scarlet 2010 Serpentine Pavilion approaches its last few days in operation, news comes that next year's creation may come from fellow Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor. Whilst the news is still yet to be confirmed by the Serpentine Gallery, rumour is rife that Zumthor will become the 11th international architect to work on the annual project.

This decision would see the Gallery go against the grain of the traditional selection process for the Pavilion architect, as Zumthor is currently working on a project with Living Architecture in Devon. The Serpentine conventionally selects architects who are yet to design in the UK, but should the rumours ring true the decision may open a whole new avenue of choice to the Serpentine in future years.

Should Zumthor be selected, the Swiss architect will join Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas in the Serpentine Gallery's hall of fame. Highly praised in his field, Zumthor has collected many architectural awards over the years, including the Praemium Imperiale in 2008 and Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture in 2006.
