Nicholas Hare Architects completes stylish addition to Farnborough's IQ Business Park
Nicholas Hare Architects has created a self-contained business campus of civic quality for developer SEGRO at their prestigious IQ Farnborough Business Park, adjacent to the Farnborough Airfield. The scheme, named Project Duo, is a 20,000 sq m office development comprising four office buildings of varying sizes and configurations, a café pavilion, and a seven-storey car park.
A key factor in the design approach was to ensure the buildings remained in keeping with the theme of the park – an ordered, well-proportioned yet distinctive family of buildings using a palette of restrained yet high-quality materials, creating attractive external spaces. Designed as a suite of speculative office buildings, but subsequently let during the design stage, Project Duo succeeds in creating a visually stunning addition to the existing business campus, which includes important remnants of UK aviation history including the re-constructed skeleton of the airship hangar.
The critical success of the scheme is that the buildings create a civilised, urban space in the context of a suburban business park. The central courtyard, enclosed on three sides and with a café pavilion at its centre, is an attractive, well-landscaped focus for those that work in the surrounding offices. Large-scale formal pre-cast concrete elements are used on outward facing elevations, providing protective yet elegant façades of an appropriate scale. These are complemented by the courtyard elevations, which exhibit a lighter, more transparent character. The buildings reset the standard for business park development at IQ Farnborough and beyond.
