Populous transforms former steelworks site into community multi-sports complex

State-of-the-art Ravenscraig Sports Facility designed by Populous has risen from the ashes of a former steelworks site and will serve the community and provide a training ground for competitive athletes in Scotland.

The development of the old site is one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe and the architectural design of the buildings' structure create a link to the steel industry that has had such a strong cultural presence on this site and within the local community. The design is based on an undulating form with integrated north-facing roof lights and glazed end walls. Its cladding has been designed as metal bands that rise from out of the ground to wrap around the structure, and are a visual reminder, reminiscent of rolled metal sheets.

The facility boasts an indoor full-sized football pitch with spectator seating, a full-sized outdoor 3G surface and six outdoor floodlit five-a-side pitches. Athletics facilities are a major part of the complex with a six lane 135m running track, throw and jump areas and a strength-and-conditioning area for athletes to use.

Also on offer is a multi-sports hall, set in N-S orientation with nine badminton courts, a huge fitness gym with top range equipment, dance studios, a sports injury clinic and office facilities. A weekend agenda of sporting fun will be complete with sporting celebrities, taster fitness classes, an attempt to hold the biggest ever Zumba class and 24 hr football tournament.

This new sports facility is preparing to host the International Children's Games in 2011 and will be a key training venue for the 2012 Olympic and 2014 Commonwealth Games. Work on the building started in January 2009 and it has been successfully completed on time and on budget. John Barrow, Senior Principal of Populous said: "We had a determined effort to make reference to the history of the site through the architectural language of the new facility. "
