Modern three storey residence completed for professional couple facing retirement

M House was designed for a professional couple who required a high quality residence suitable for their planned retirement. Having worked with the client on several previous occasions, Biscoe Wilson Architects was familiar with their modern yet restrained tastes. A sculptural form cut into a hill in Hamilton, this three-storey house is an exercise in modern design and employs rational and elegant planning strategies.

The house has been designed around an entry tower and off-set circulation stair that services the three levels. This device acts as a hinge, off which the various spaces rotate. Crisp detailing, use of a limited material and colour palette and passive solar design have produced a premium house suited to a subtropical climate. The southern sloping site enjoys magnificent city and river views. Building orientation, sectional manipulation and the introduction of clerestory windows has produced an environmentally successful house. The house has been designed using passive ESD principals.
