St Luke’s CE Primary School scoops 2010 RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award
The RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award 2010 has been presented to St Luke's CE Primary School in Wolverhampton, with namesake Lady Sorrell commenting: "Anyone involved in building a new primary school should go and see this school before doing anything else." Designed by Architype with landscaping by Coe Design, St Luke's was completed in June 2009 and has been deemed ‘environmentally excellent' by BREEAM standards.
One of the major features of the primary school that has coined so many positive observations is its lack of corridors. Research has found that bullying regularly occurs in the corridors and walkways of educational facilities, and in stripping these from the design it is hoped that antisocial behaviour will be eliminated at St Luke's.
Instead, classrooms are grouped around two light and airy social hubs, encouraging a sense of community within the 2,911 sq m complex. Large sliding glass screens allow the interior spaces to extend out into the external domain, where generous canopies provide sun-screening and shelter from the rain. A large focus has been placed on eco-friendly design, with all buildings insulated with recycled newspapers and all windows triple-glazed. Children are also able to monitor their school's energy performance through a link between their computers and the building management system.
