JA Joubert Architecture enjoys double success in international competitions
Rotterdam-based architecture office JA Joubert Architecture is in the celebrating mood having recently claimed first and second prize in international design competitions held by a private developer.
The first of these two contests concerned a 51,300 sq m development with a 14,000 sq m parking garage in which JA Joubert Architecture's design stole first place. ‘Park Life’ is a new neighbourhood complex in Tirana, Albania with scenic views over the city and picturesque Tirana Lake. A masterplan put forward by the firm suggested an integral solution for building and parking, directly linking them to the terrain conditions, thus creating a new community for different age groups, complete with sport and health facilities set within a continuous green park.
Taking second place in another competition for the same client (Eurocol), JA Joubert Architecture’s design for a mixed-use building along the Rruga Durresit (the main road into Tirana) attempted to break with the tradition for box-shaped corporate structures. The practice filled out the space set by the urban regulations and subsequently hollowed out this shaped until the maximum allowed volume was reached. Bold, recognisable outer shapes of this 12,600 sq m facility are henceforth contrasted with open inner spaces which allow for flexible development in programme between shopping, offices and housing.
