Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue’s Scottish Parliament Building has won the UK's RIBA Stirling best building award. The project, a joint venture between EMBT and local firm RMJM was mired in controversy during its construction and suffered massive budget overruns but has emerged as a highly acclaimed piece of architecture. Sadly Miralles did not survive to see the full realisation of his vision but the project was taken through to completion by his partner Benedetta Tagliabue. Competition for the award was stiff and the jury took three hours to reach agreement. Foster and Partner’s McLaren Centre and Zaha Hadid’s BMW building were close contenders.
