Hadid receives first commission in Iraq with Central Bank Headquarters in Baghdad
Despite soaring to the dizzy heights of fame with projects such as MAXXI Museum in Rome, the Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Stone Towers in Cairo, Zaha Hadid had until recently to be commissioned for a project in the country of her birth.
Maybe the stack of Prizker, RIBA and Equerre d’argent prizes and nominations swayed the authorities in her favour or could it be the swirling sculptural designs that have become her trademark? Either way, Hadid is now set to design the new Central Back Headquarters in Baghdad.
Official plans are yet to be released however it is unlikely that the specifics of what is sure to be a complex security system will ever be made public knowledge after the chilling terrorist attacks in June, in which 14 people were killed and over 50 people injured. It is reported that Hadid began designing for the project several weeks prior to the attack on the current headquarters – a marble-clad reinforced concrete structure devised by Dissing & Weitling in 1985.
