New transport hub for Stoke from Austin-Smith:Lord
The ambition for this new city-centre bus station was not only to provide a new transport hub in the centre of Stoke but also to radically improve the public realm and stimulate further development of a cultural quarter in the area.
The site for the new Bus Station is at the physical and conceptual heart of the regeneration of Hanley City Centre. As a focus for improved connectivity, it will be a critical catalyst for the socio-economic recovery of the wider area.
The design takes inspiration from the culture and heritage of the local pottery industry in the form of a sweeping canopy, which responds to the movements and flows of its context to provide a pleasant and uplifting space. The station enclosure provides shelter from rain and snow while meeting sustainable aspirations through use of natural ventilation, rainwater-harvesting, and air-source heat pumps.
Finally, the unique road layout allows for a safe and efficient drive-through access that separates buses from pedestrians and connects the station to a proposed new public square.
The Austin-Smith:Lord team, consisting of JMP Transport Engineers, Curtins Structural Engineers and Hilson Moran on Environmental and M&E were supported in the provision of costs by Gleeds and Project Management input from RLB ,worked closely in the 4 week design period to develop an exciting and innovative scheme which found favour with both the public and their peers.
