Green light for temporary Water Polo Arena at site of London Olympics 2012

With construction currently on track and under budget for the London 2012 Olympic Games, it comes as no surprise that designs for a temporary Water Polo Arena by David Morley Architects have been granted planning approval by the Olympic Delivery Authority Planning committee.

The quirky design sports an air-inflated, recycled pvc cushion roof for maximum insulation and has been specifically designed to be deconstructed after the international competition for relocation purposes. Plans are such that the structure can be rebuilt elsewhere for future use either in part or in full.

The 5,000-seater, asymmetric venue will be wrapped in a distinctive silver membrane, complete with translucent shard-shaped panels – the asymmetry has been proven to provide the best sightlines for viewing Water Polo. The 37m by 23m by 2m competition pool will be accompanied by a marginally smaller warm up pool.

Organisers of the London 2012 Olympics have placed a strong focus on environmentally-friendly design and sustainability issues, ensuring that all builds are as green as possible. David Morley Architects’ Water Polo Arena is no different, reducing water use by 40% through low-flow taps and showers and waterless urinals, and incorporating materials available through the rental market to ensure reuse and a reduction in construction waste.

Construction is on track to start in spring 2011 and be complete by spring 2012.
