House Crowe in Pietermaritzburg

The client’s challenging brief: maximum view, abundant light, contemporary home harmonized with the cascading landscape. The form and spatial alignment was dictated to by the steepness of the site and the original home which was perched on the upper platform of the split level site. A low impact form was opted for. That which could not be accommodated within the platform was perched over the side with minimal impact into the green areas. A dynamic relationship between inside and outside was created with the home being likened to a ‘rocky outcrop that teethers over a leafy edge’ staring into the ‘valley’ below. The home has an unusual connection to site, landscape and view – achieved through extensive glazing with movable screens. The forms are kept simple yet sculptural.
