The outlook New York's 1904 Beaux-Arts station is bleak no longer thanks to LHPA
Spread over four levels and with a capacity of 10.5m passengers per year, Bleecker Street Station is set to provide a northbound IND/IRT connection from Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan to the Upper West and East Sides for the first time. The €71.5m project will also see safety upgrades, ADA access, streamlined connections and a 73m widening of the downtown platform.
Alongside the contemporary remodeling and upgrade of the station, many of the original features are to be carefully restored to their former glory. White ceramic tiles, blue terracotta plaques and faience, mosaic bands and roman brick wainscoting with marble caps will be used to transform the historical artifacts and wall finishes throughout the station. All eight of the original ‘Bleecker Station’ terracotta name plaques will also be repaired and restored.
Construction will comprise of two 182.9m platforms, associated entrances, control areas and transfer passageways, while an escalator and four elevators will be installed to bring new accessibility to the station. The project is slated for completion in 2012.
