Planning permission approved for £4.5bn development on banks of the River Mersey

Yesterday saw a huge step forward for the UK’s largest planning application – Wirral Waters – as Wirral Planning Committee granted planning permission for the £4.5bn scheme. Located on the edge of the River Mersey in Liverpool, the 1.7m sq m ‘job driven’ development is expected to provide more than 20,000 new jobs and 14,000 new homes in the area as construction continues over a thirty-year span.

Privately financed, the scheme was submitted for planning permission by revered developers Peel Holdings. The project will allow architecture firms SOM, Glenn Howells, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and HKR to each design a quarter of the immense development. Collectively, this is thought to include 400,000 sq m of office space, 60,000 sq m of retail space, 38,000 sq m of hotel and conference facilities and 100,000 sq m of culture, education, community and leisure space.

Richard Mawdsley, Development Manager at Peel commented yesterday: “Tonight’s endorsement by Wirral Council is a huge milestone for Wirral Waters. We are delighted with the result. The positive and unanimous outcome is a testament to true collaboration between a very large number of groups, organisations and individuals. The Committee’s decision is a massive step forward towards the delivery of what is a truly shared vision - and one that can only improve the economic prospects of current and future generations."
