BDP to design two new facilities for Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu province, China

Major international practice Building Design Partnership (BDP) has won the competition to design a new Faculty of Medicine and an admin building at Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu province in China.

Up against stiff competition from the Architectural Design Institute of Zhejiang University and Christian de Portzamparc who became the first French architect to be awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1994, BDP scooped the project with a unanimous vote.

Spread over 70,000 sq m, the new project involves the design of two separate structures – a teaching and research building and a centre for administration, also containing a museum and conference auditoria. A key feature of BDP’s plan is the sustainability factor. The design responds to the specific climatic conditions of Jiangsu province – clear-cut seasonal changes with frequent ‘plum rains’ between spring and summer and typhoons and rainstorms in late summer and early autumn – whilst providing constant access to internal and external landscaped spaces throughout the year.

John McManus, BDP’s Project Director said “We are absolutely delighted to win such a prestigious commission in China; our strong track record and award-winning experience in higher education projects undoubtedly played an large part in this success.”
