Fear and Loathing? More like Queer and Engrossing as unique food charity Canstruction® select winners in Las Vegas

Still going strong after almost twenty years, Canstruction® is a quirky year-round design competition for teams of architects, engineers and students throughout North America and select countries across the world to raise awareness for the design community and collect food supplies for those in need through fun-filled design/build contests. Each team constructs a large-scale model entirely formed of full cans of food, usually donated by bemused members of the public. Ranging from the highly eccentric to the bizarrely brilliant, the majority of the hand-built structures beggar belief as to how they remain standing, boasting gravity defying extensions and overhanging platforms (see left).

With an average construction period of 8-12 weeks, each carefully planned form takes up thousands of cans of food which are distributed to emergency feeding programmes post-competition. Since its inception in 1992, Canstruction® has donated ten million pounds of food to the needy and continues to raise awareness for the fight against hunger in its own unique way. Local contests are held throughout the year, the winners of which go through to an annual competition where they compete against each other for the most revered titles.

This year’s final favourites were seven in total, announced at Canstruction®’s 14th Annual International Competition in Las Vegas. ‘ORANGE you Glad you CAN e-lemon-ate Hunger’ by Arlington, Virginia’s Samaha Associates took the Juror’s Favourite gong with its luminous orange and lemon forms whilst BRR Architecture from Kansas City’s ‘War(hol) on Hunger’ – a 360° pixilated composition of Andy Warhol’s iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe – was awarded an honourable mention. Also up there with the big guns was ‘Two-Point CANversion’, an astonishing feat of structural engineering from Fluor Canada whose 8 ft tall American football quite rightly scooped the Structural Ingenuity award.
