Colourful, curved landmark building underway
Construction is now underway on a brand new £18,660,000 campus building for Trinity School in Lewisham. Award winning architects Watkins Gray International are providing executive architecture and lead consultant services on the 6,310 sqm Church of England secondary school, which is a key part of Lewisham’s BSF programme. This news is just in after Michael Gove’s announcement to cancel the Building for Schools scheme.
The new school has capacity for 600 students, and completely replaces the previous school building which opened in 1957. The new building incorporates a two storey atrium space and a striking coloured-glass entrance, intended to create a local landmark building. The attractive design features very few straight lines, generally incorporating “curves within curves”. The school also features extensive sedum roofs and water harvesting from the roof for landscape irrigation, and is expected to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. Trinity was assessed as the fourth most improved school in London last year, and maintains close links with the Church of England, offering a strong Christian ethos.
Appointed after RIBA Stage D, Watkins Gray International is providing project and interior architecture services, implementing Stage 2 Design from the approved contractors’ proposals and revising designs to clear planning conditions.
Practical completion is expected in December 2010, with the new school scheduled for hand over in January 2011.
