What a stunning place! Great design, beautifully detailed. This is as architecture should be. An example of sensitive placement within a wonderful natural environment.
 

Edward Szewczyk completes residence and jetty two hours drive from Sydney 

Big Rock is a 140 acre property two hours drive from Sydney. It is a place where owners and their friends escape from the city on a weekly basis to indulge in activities close to nature. Big Rock is one of the locations where Arts in the Valley takes place - an art festival combining classical and contemporary music with poetry, painting, sculpture, photography and architecture.

Big Rock was designed by Edward Szewczyk as a small, intricately detailed, steel pavilion responding in a subtle way to the local environment. Reasonably substantial additions that took place included a swimming pool and jetty. The philosophy of the project was built on the relationship of three main elements: a lightly suspended steel pavilion, a solid sculptural volume of the pool and the rolling slopes of the valley.

Located on the dam below the pool and on the edge between the water and the forest is the jetty: a steel structure essentially made of two horizontal planes, deck and roof. The jetty is suspended above the water and the gazebo is suspended towards the trees. The role of the designer is to provide the point from which nature can be appreciated and interacted with. Jetty/gazebo is such a point taking strength from its surrounds.
