UCLA, NBBJ and PCL break ground on transformation of legendary Pauley Pavilion
Signaling the start of the transformation of one of the nation's most famous athletic and student-use facilities, UCLA along with construction company PCL and global design firm NBBJ recently broke ground on the renovation and expansion of Pauley Pavilion. UCLA has partnered with the Los Angeles office of NBBJ, a leading architecture and design firm, to transform Pauley Pavilion into a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility. The project will entail long overdue infrastructure and amenities improvements on the 1965 building, including major seismic and life-safety upgrades, as well as much needed improved seating, new pedestrian concourses, and modern team facilities.
The design optimises amenities and circulation space by expanding the exterior to create four distinct connected concourses that will alleviate the need for cross circulation within the event space: the North concourse (along Bruin Walk) will feature a 35 ft glass-enclosed entrance; the East, will include a Tradition Gallery that will showcase the legacy of UCLA Athletics; the South, will open out, via glazed hangar doors, to an enhanced marketplace and create a dynamic indoor-outdoor environment; and the West will link the building together, allowing for easy access to the greatly expanded concessions and restrooms. The new concourse structure will create an open, light, and welcoming face to the campus community.
New materials will complement and enhance the character of the original 1965 Welton Becket design, which focused on economical use of materials and an industrial aesthetic. The new exterior design integrates terracotta rain-screen panels, glass curtain wall, frosted channel glass, glass overhead folding hangar doors and precast concrete panels. Care has been taken in the design to insure that the iconic existing roof trusses are visible from all sides, and a new lighting system is being integrated to highlight this signature feature of the building. Extensive site work will enhance the overall campus character around the building, and will create several new campus gathering areas designed to weave Pauley into the overall campus.
